Thermal Energy Networks: Steps to Successful Implementation

Thermal energy networks are rapidly becoming a preferred solution to reach overarching energy goals and priorities. By centralizing thermal energy resources and interconnecting end users with varying thermal needs, thermal energy networks create an economy of scale to cost-effectively meet customer demands. Panelists will discuss their real-world approach to project identification, development, design execution, and implementation (construction) of thermal energy networks. The discussion will include best practices, case study examples, and challenges encountered on projects undertaken.

CDM Smith Inc.

Ms. Kinson is a mechanical engineer with six years of experience focused on district energy and geoexchange. She has contributed to multiple geothermal borefield and distribution designs and she has worked on multiple feasibility studies including multiple community-networked geothermal pilot projects for several utilities. Ms. Kinson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering: Energy from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Engineering degree in Energy Systems Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Sam Gerber

CDM Smith

Mechanical engineer Sam Gerber brings a deep technical expertise to designing sustainable energy systems, including district geothermal heat pump networks that replace fossil fuel infrastructure. Recognized as the 2023 AEE Mid-Atlantic & Southeast Young Energy Professional of the Year, he has played key roles in pioneering projects like 1515 Surf Avenue, 1 Java Street, and the Mount Vernon UTEN. Much like his colleges, Sam has a drive for innovation, contributing to impactful efforts like the Eversource Geothermal Demonstration project.

Chris Treiling

CDM Smith

Geotechnical engineer Chris Treiling brings great expertise in soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and earthquake engineering. He has led geotechnical field investigations, managed laboratory testing programs, and authored technical reports, while also supporting the design and construction of geothermal systems. Chris has played a key role in overseeing geothermal technology implementation in schools, government facilities, and the Eversource Geothermal Pilot project.
