Heat Recovery from District Cooling Networks

As electrification of Campus Energy Networks continues, it will be critical to optimize the efficiency of heat pumps to avoid placing undue burden on the electrical grid. Centralized energy recovery heat pumps are an ideal way to shift thermal energy from your cooling network to your heating network while achieving exceptional COPs and optimized GHG savings. Markham District energy achieved this feat with the newly installed 4MWt Heat Recovery Heat Pump which simultaneously produces 85°C (185F) heating and 5°C (41F) which effectively shifts energy from their cooling customers to their heating customers. This base loaded heat pump displaces natural gas boilers and centrifugal chillers equating to an annual GHG savings of over 5,000 tonnes.
