Going Behind the Meter: G&W Electric’s Microgrid

Many organizations are considering building microgrids of various sizes and styles to meet the challenges of today’s grid.  Besides meeting environmental goals, companies need reliable power sources to secure their processes and serve their customers.  In 2021 G&W began building their own microgrid using 2MW solar generation, 8MWH of energy storage, 1.3MVA flywheel UPS, 2MW local diesel generation, along with multiple utility feeds. These sources provide seamless power transfer to the campus as well as ancillary services to the local grid to keep it stable.   This presentation focuses on the justification for, and challenges faced, and the resulting benefits in designing and building a microgrid for one’s own campus on a large scale.
