Prioritizing waste energy as a carbon-free resource, the Integrated Community Energy and Harvesting System (ICE-Harvest) maximizes energy sharing and storage to achieve net-zero emissions. Conversion of HCE’s District Energy system at McMaster Innovation Park to a micro-thermal network with advanced energy harvesting is analyzed as a case study. This presentation will showcase energy models and feature comparisons with conventional energy applications, demonstrating reduction of fossil fuels without a peak demand increase caused by electrification of heating.

The United States represents the largest market in the world for energy reduction. But what can we do? This presentation, drawing on the practical experience of 20+ years of energy auditing millions of square feet of building space, will help us determine whether an energy audit is a good place to start. It will also present real-life practical results, including low-cost or no-cost opportunities present in most buildings.

DTE Vantage is constructing a 29 MW energy project at Orion’s carbon black facility in Louisiana developed under a third-party design, build, own, operate, and maintain structure. The project will convert Orion’s process waste heat into carbon-free electricity with an on-site heat recovery system and steam turbine generator. This presentation will discuss the evolution of the technical solution, as well as the commercial arrangement to provide Orion’s electricity needs and market export power to the grid.

The focus of the presentation is to share with delegates the problems solved with regards to obtaining a complete understanding of the condition of a ducted Gen 2 district heating network that had suffered a catastrophic failure during critical operations. In order for the operator to realise the correct path forward in terms of repair versus replacement it was imperative that condition reporting of the entire length of the effected system was obtained. With inline inspection results providing a firm understanding of the severity corrosion and fitness for service reporting provided by Quest Integrity's Engineering Analysis Group, informed remediation plans could be realised and immediately put into action.

In cyberspace, Bitcoin miners generate coins by providing security to the network, but in the real world, they generate a lot of heat. MintGreen manufactures Digital Boilers that mine Bitcoin and recover over 96% of mining energy to heat communities. These boilers are the cost-leading low-carbon technology and can be co-located with DE systems in any standard mechanical room. By the end of 2022, the world’s first city will be heated by Bitcoin.

Aging electrical infrastructure across North America has become an increasing concern. Many of the industrial facilities constructed in the mid-1900s are beginning to age beyond equipment’s life expectancy. As reliability and equipment failure concerns arise, customers are looking to upgrade, update, and modify their existing electrical distribution systems.
This presentation will discuss the specific equipment replacements, configuration changes, protection upgrades, and the various considerations that impacted the project design for INVISTA’s facility in Kingston, Ontario.

Partnering with Neelands Group, this microturbine-based trigeneration CCHP system combines an absorption chiller and hot water heat recovery system with a C02 refrigeration plant for a grocery store in the GTA. CO2 has a global warming potential of 1, resulting in a significant GHG reduction over conventional refrigerants. The CCHP system adds resiliency as a small refrigeration microgrid, to keep food from spoiling during power outages by providing energy to critical systems.
